Musculoskeletal Radiology
Academic Leadership and Innovation in Musculoskeletal Imaging
Our board-certified, fellowship-trained radiologists share their decades of combined experience with medical students, residents and fellows, training them to offer specialized imaging services tailored to the complexities of the human musculoskeletal system. Under their mentorship, our trainees are equipped to offer advanced interpretation and collaborative care for a wide spectrum of complex conditions involving the bones, joints, muscles and connective tissues. As dedicated educators, we provide rigorous training and mentorship, ensuring the next generation of radiologists is equipped with the knowledge, skills and vision to lead.
Our team is also deeply committed to advancing the field through translational research. We actively contribute to cutting-edge studies that bridge the gap between imaging science and clinical care, driving innovation in musculoskeletal diagnostics and interventions.
Division Highlights
- Low‑field MRI metal‑artifact research: Advanced investigation into 0.55T MRI metal‑artifact reduction techniques, enabling more reliable evaluation for postoperative infection or neoplasm in patients with orthopedic hardware.
- Non‑contrast MRI infection evaluation: Assessment and optimization of non‑contrast MRI sequences for detecting musculoskeletal infections and abscesses, reducing reliance on contrast agents while maintaining diagnostic accuracy.
- Dedicated tumor MRI protocols: Development of specialized MRI workflows tailored for musculoskeletal tumor characterization and surgical planning.
- Lower extremity and shoulder CT optimization: Creation of precise lower extremity CT protocols for preoperative measurements and advanced shoulder CT mapping for arthroplasty planning.
- Photon counting CT for MSK imaging: Implementation of photon counting CT to deliver high-resolution musculoskeletal imaging at significantly reduced radiation doses.
- MSK-trained sonographer service: Trainees learn in the only practice in Tucson with a dedicated MSK certified sonographer, elevating diagnostic accuracy and procedural support.
Trainees are mentored by experts in their fields, working with a clinical partner that offers unique services in the community.
- Dedicated MSK ultrasound: Comprehensive MSK ultrasound program supported by a certified MSK sonographer, offering high-precision diagnostic and interventional capabilities.
- Elite athlete imaging: Rapid turnaround imaging interpretation for high-level athletes with direct, urgent communication to sports medicine teams.
- Specialized tumor imaging: Expertise in musculoskeletal tumor imaging using rigorously designed, high-specificity protocols.
Support for local athletics: Ongoing imaging support for University of Arizona Athletics and other regional sports organizations, contributing to athlete health, performance and safe return to play decisions.
Residents, fellows and medical students benefit from:
- Multidisciplinary collaborations with experts in orthopedic surgery, athletic medicine, rheumatology, pediatrics and oncology
- Incorporation of leading-edge research into clinical practice, advancing the precision and depth of musculoskeletal imaging
