Academic Leadership and Innovation in Breast Imaging

Our breast radiology team is deeply committed to advancing the field through translational research, academic excellence and clinical innovation. We actively lead and contribute to cutting-edge studies aimed at improving breast MRI — enhancing image quality, diagnostic accuracy and patient experience. Our research explores advanced techniques such as abbreviated MRI protocols, diffusion-weighted imaging and AI-assisted interpretation, all designed to make breast MRI more accessible and impactful in early cancer detection.

The Division of Breast Radiology trains future radiologists to seamlessly integrate advanced imaging technology with specialized breast-imaging expertise. As dedicated educators, we provide rigorous training and mentorship to medical students, residents and fellows. Through hands-on experience and scholarly engagement, we prepare the next generation of breast imaging specialists to lead with expertise, empathy and a spirit of discovery. Trainees work collaboratively with breast surgeons, oncologists, pathologists and referring providers to ensure the highest standards of care in a supportive and caring environment.

Advanced Procedures

Trainees learn to perform a wide range of image-guided and minimally invasive procedures, mentored by highly trained physicians.

Our clinical partner, Banner – University Medicine, was the first facility in Southern Arizona to offer this advanced technique.

This minimally invasive outpatient procedure harnesses reflector-based guidance for surgical planning.

Breast fibroadenomas can be treated with this minimally invasive procedure, which freezes benign tumors.

Trainees will also have opportunities to learn to perform cyst aspiration, ductography and skin punch biopsies.

Residents, fellows and medical students benefit from:

  • Mentorship from physicians who are dedicated exclusively to breast imaging
  • Collaboration with oncologists and breast surgeons at Banner – University Medical Center and the University of Arizona Cancer Center
  • Camaraderie with a dedicated, highly skilled and compassionate team

Academic Excellence

Our breast imaging fellows are prepared to become leaders in breast radiology. Our fellowship offers a robust, high-volume experience across the full spectrum of breast imaging and intervention, including digital mammography, tomosynthesis, breast ultrasound, MRI and image-guided procedures. Fellows engage with a diverse patient population and a wide range of benign and malignant breast conditions. This dynamic environment fosters clinical excellence, cultural sensitivity and a deep understanding of multidisciplinary breast care, including close collaboration with surgery, oncology and pathology.
