Interventional Radiology - Integrated Residency

Interventional Radiology-Integrated Residency

The Interventional Radiology – Integrated Residency Program offers a comprehensive and progressive training experience in both diagnostic and interventional radiology.

We welcomed our first IR integrated resident in 2018, and since then, the program has continued to grow, innovate and prepare residents for excellence in modern IR practice.

In addition to our dedicated faculty and affiliation with the College of Medicine – Tucson and Banner – University Medical Center, our city offers a rich array of cultural and artistic amenities, all set against a backdrop of stunning natural beauty. Known for its vibrant university community, Tucson is a hub of diversity and intellectual engagement, making it an excellent place to live and raise a family.

About Our Program

Recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), American Board of Radiology (ABR) and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the Interventional Radiology - Integrated Residency Program offers expanded procedural and peri-procedural care beyond the traditional experiences of diagnostic radiology residency or interventional radiology fellowship.

At a Glance

  • Early and continuous IR exposure: Procedural and clinical IR training begins in the first year and builds progressively.
  • Balanced DR + IR curriculum: Strong diagnostic radiology foundation paired with comprehensive interventional training.
  • Diverse procedural experience: Broad case mix including trauma, oncology, venous disease, dialysis access and minimally invasive therapies.
  • Integrated clinical training: Dedicated IR clinics, inpatient consults and multidisciplinary conferences.
  • Supportive academic environment: Faculty-driven teaching, structured didactics and personalized mentorship.
  • Advanced technology and innovation: Exposure to cutting-edge devices, image-guided therapies and evolving IR techniques.
  • Strong fellowship and career preparation: Graduates are well prepared for academic IR, private practice or subspecialty pathways.
  • Research and academic opportunities: Access to clinical research, device innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration across the University of Arizona campus, with strong resident participation in annual national society meetings such as SIR and GEST.

Our Interventional Radiology - Integrated Residency Program is a five-year ACGME-accredited residency that begins after the completion of a one-year ACGME-accredited clinical experience. This is followed by three years of diagnostic radiology training, culminating in two years of focused interventional radiology training within a clinically oriented teaching environment.

The program includes essential clinical care rotations, outpatient clinic experiences and inpatient consultations, providing a strong foundation for careers in both interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology, leading to dual certification.

PGY-2 through PGY-4

In the first three years, residents rotate through all clinical subspecialties of radiology, including pediatrics, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, chest, musculoskeletal, interventional/angiography, neuroradiology, mammography, ultrasound, abdominal CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Residents are also required to complete research projects, and dedicated research time is available as an elective.

PGY-5 and PGY-6

During the fourth and fifth years, residents shift to a focused interventional radiology training experience. Training in interventional radiology involves a gradual increase in responsibility under the close supervision of faculty members. Residents receive evaluations after each rotation and feedback on their educational progress, including biannual conferences with the training director.

All residents participate in the annual American College of Radiology In-Training Examination. A board-review program, a physics course and small focus-study groups with faculty help prepare senior residents for success on the American Board of Radiology Examination.
