Resident
Bronze A Paul O'Mara

Where are you from? Rockford, Michigan.

What are your personal interests/hobbies? No matter where I’m at, the great outdoors feels like home. Camping, hiking and backpacking are longtime passions of mine. Having grown up in Michigan, I take every chance I get to swim in the Great Lakes. I also collect rocks, my favorite being Michigan’s elusive Petoskey stone. I spend a lot of time getting the zoomies out (and training) with my Australian shepherd, Bunny. I love road trips, too! (I drove across the U.S. six times in 2024.) I can talk to you for hours about music, concerts and the best Spotify playlists, too!

What are your professional interests? Wilderness and austere medicine have been my jam since Day 1 of med school. Disaster medicine, POCUS and EMS fascinate me too.

Why did you choose our program? I have been visiting my sister in Arizona for several years now, and have fallen in love with everything the state has to offer! I speak Spanish and am passionate about providing care to the Hispanic community wherever I practice. Finding an institution where the department of emergency medicine is respected within the hospital has always been important to me, and that seems to genuinely be the case with U of A EM. Furthermore, I’m striving to hone my POCUS skills throughout residency, and the ultrasound curriculum at U of A is one of the most impressive! Lastly, the vibes on interview day felt so supportive and genuine; I really felt like my interviewers were curious and cared about me as a person beyond being a residency applicant.

Favorite activity in Tucson, or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program? I’m excited to explore the hiking around Mount Lemmon and hopefully improve my skiing! Coming from Michigan, I’m really looking forward to all the sunshine, too. Also, the amazing FOOD!

What are your non-medical goals during residency? Spend lots of time with my sister riding horses, get into rock climbing, start agility training with my Aussie (Bunny) and explore the desert southwest.
