Kyra Langhelm, DO
Where are you from? Gig Harbor, Washington
What are your personal interests/hobbies? I’ve always been an active person, and I’m looking forward to the 350-plus days of sunshine in Tucson. When I’m not working, you’ll typically find me trail running, mountain biking, skiing or camping. I also enjoy searching for great coffee shops, finding a reason to dress up in costumes, going on adventures with my dog and partner, or attempting some ambitious DIY project.
What are your professional interests? EMS, wilderness medicine, rural health
Why did you choose our program? I chose U of A South Campus Emergency Medicine because I wanted a program that had a strong sense of community and felt like a family, and it was clear that U of A South Campus EM offered that. Since the day I interviewed, I have felt supported by everyone I’ve met and found it easy to connect with folks on a personal level. In addition to the awesome people, the program offers the opportunity to become a more competent Spanish speaker while working in a community hospital.
What is your favorite activity in Tucson or what attracted you to Tucson besides the residency program? Tucson has a particular charm and character that I connect with. It’s artsy and eclectic but also outdoorsy, with good trails and close to lots of open space. I grew up in the Northwest, yet I’ve always had a strong love for the desert. I love the red rocks, the sunshine, the clear night skies, cacti and the overall openness of the desert. I am excited to build a community here and spend time outdoors recreating and learning the names of all the native species that call the Sonoran Desert home.
What are your nonmedical goals during residency? While in residency, I hope to become more involved in the greater Tucson community. I want to explore Mount Lemmon and the surrounding areas, including the Baja Peninsula, complete a 25K with my fiancé and expand our fur family with the addition of another dog. I’m also looking forward to finding an adaptive sports organization to volunteer with, as I’ve enjoyed three years of work with my local organization in Oregon.
