Dr. Dharmaraja was raised in Southern California. After graduating from Cal Poly, he worked as an engineer supporting Navy and Marine Corps flight test operations in Maryland. During this time, he volunteered as an EMT, which led him to leave engineering and pursue a career in medicine. He developed an interest in addiction medicine and harm reduction through experiences in medical school and residency. He became a hospitalist at a community hospital upon graduating from residency. He comes to addiction medicine after his interest in the field was rekindled by his experiences in inpatient medicine.
