Topic
“Cardiac Risk of Noncardiac Surgery: A Piece of My Mind”
Presenter
Kim A. Eagle, MD, MACC
Dr. Eagle is the Albion Walter Hewlett Professor of Internal Medicine and director of the Frankel Cardiovascular Center at the University of Michigan Health System. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University in 1976 and his medical degree from Tufts University Medical School in 1979. He then completed a residency and chief residency in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital (1979-83), followed by research and clinical fellowships in cardiology and health services research at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital (1983-86). He served at MGH where he was promoted to associate director of clinical cardiology and associate professor of medicine at Harvard before moving to the University of Michigan in 1994.
At the U of M, Dr. Eagle developed an outcomes research program focusing on quality, cost-effectiveness, practice guidelines, acute coronary syndromes, treatment of aortic diseases, the fight against childhood obesity and reuse of pacemakers in developing nations. His outcomes research team has led quality improvement initiatives across the state of Michigan in acute myocardial infarctions, heart failure and coronary intervention. He has contributed extramural presentations to more than 115,000 learners in 33 U.S. states and 12 countries. He has published 782 peer-reviewed articles, 77 chapters, and edited eight books including his latest, “The Heart of a Champion,” co-written with legendary Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler.
Dr. Eagle has served the American College of Cardiology on various committees and task forces, winning multiple honors for his service — including the 2018 Distinguished Scientist Award (Clinical Domain). He also has been active with the NIH’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, most recently as study chair of its Genetic Causes of Thoracic Aortic Conditions (GenTAC) and is currently chair of the GenTAC Alliance, powered by the Marfan Foundation. He has served the local and national American Heart Association, receiving the national AHA Laennec Society’s Clinician Educator Award in 2013. He’s past president of the Association of University Cardiologists and a World Medical Relief board member. In 2014, U of M and many of his grateful patients created the Kim A. Eagle Professorship in Cardiovascular Medicine and an endowed research fund bearing his name. In 2024, the Eagle Fund for Education was created to support specialized training of U of M’s Cardiovascular Medicine fellows.
