Dr. David Lieberman is an emeritus professor and past chief of the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Oregon Health & Science University (1997-2021) and the Portland VA Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. Internationally recognized as an expert on colon cancer screening, he served as chair for VA Cooperative Study No. 380, a landmark 2000 medical study that utilized colonoscopy to screen asymptomatic subjects for colorectal cancer, resulting in publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He also chaired the U.S. Multi-Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer (American Gastroenterological Association, 2006-12), and authored colon cancer screening recommendations (American College of Gastroenterology, 2008) as well as colonoscopy quality indicators (American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy & ACG, 2007), review of colorectal cancer screening (JAMA, 2016), and polyp surveillance recommendations (USMSTF, 2012 & 2020). 

Dr. Lieberman was director of the NIH-supported Clinical Outcomes Research Initiative (1999-2016) that created a national endoscopic data repository for research, with more than 90 peer-reviewed publications to date. He also served as a NIH National Commission on Digestive Diseases member (2006-08), Gastroenterology associate editor (2011-13), and President’s Cancer Panel advisor (2020-21). A president of the ASGE (2001-02), AGA Institute (2018-19), and AGA (2019-20), as well as AGA Colorectal Cancer Task Force chair (2021-present), he was the 2025 recipient of the AGA’s Julius M. Friedenwald Medal, recognizing his lifelong contributions to the field of gastroenterology.
