Education Overview

The Department of Psychiatry is one of the original departments in the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, which was founded in 1967.

Our residency program launched in 1971, and our department has the largest training programs for adult and child and adolescent psychiatry in Arizona. Our education programs are committed to tackling the dire shortage of psychiatrists. We are known for our focus on community-based mental health care and our multidisciplinary approach to the medical/psychiatry interface, along with our rigorous, experiential education.

We are living in extraordinary times in which leaders in psychiatric and behavioral medicine are needed more than ever. The vital imperative for all to have access to personalized, compassionate and empathetic health care requires creative, well-trained leaders in psychiatry and psychology to help improve the world through clinical care, education and research.

Please explore our website filled with robust details about our programs — along with the faces of people working toward better mental health outcomes for our patients, our communities and all the places we call home.
