Helen Hill, Fellowship Manager, Pulmonary division
Congratulations to Matthew Borchart, MD, a PGY-6 fellow in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship of the Department of Medicine’s Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, who was presented with a Banner Health Hero Award on Oct. 21.
The PCCM fellowship is one of three fellowships in the division along with a Critical Care Track specialty and Research specialty year offered for fellows at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson.
Dr. Borchart stated that honor was regarding “a very challenging week in the medical ICU where outcomes were not as great as usual” in July. Still, “the ability to assist this patient was a very rewarding experience,” he added during the presentation event hosted at a weekly PCCM Grand Rounds in the college’s Lecture Hall 8403.

The award was presented by fellowship director Jim Knepler, MD, a professor and the division’s associate chief, who congratulated Dr. Borchart “for his unwavering level of excellent care with all his patients.”
The Banner Health Hero Program provides patients, families and team members with the opportunity to honor an outstanding provider by making a philanthropic gift in a clinical team member’s honor.
Banner Health Heroes are awarded a framed certificate and a special pin to wear with pride.
On behalf of Banner’s Cultivating Happiness in Medicine (CHIM) initiative — its systemwide strategy to support physician and APP well-being — and the Banner Health Foundation, Marjorie Bessel, MD, executive vice president and chief clinical officer for Banner Health, said in a statement, “Thank you for exemplifying excellence in patient care and for fostering a culture of compassion and professionalism that inspires both your patients and peers.”
