This presentation will provide information on how common it is for patients not to understand what they are told by health professionals and provide guidance on how to improve communication with patients so they will understand you.

Learning objectives: 

  1. Be aware that limited health literacy is common, even among patients and population groups that do not fit your “stereotype” of who has limited health literacy
  2. Use plain language explanations and easy-to-understand terms with all patients, regardless of their education level
  3. Use “teach-back” appropriately to ensure that patients understand what you are telling them
