Research presentations by Department of Medicine faculty were among mainstays of the annual event, with a special focus on CTSAs, cardiovascular health, and the impact Arizona’s unique climate and soils have on skin cancer and fungal respiratory disease.

With over 50 new Department of Medicine faculty in the prior year, the spring retreat serves to orient new physicians and researchers on how the college’s largest department operates, offering successful communication styles and wellness tips.

Depending upon how you splice it, 26-29% of the Banner – University Medicine physicians who made it onto the 2025 Castle Connelly ‘Top Doctors’ list for Tucson are from the Department of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson.

The IM Subspecialty Speed Dating event helps medical students — nearly 30 of whom attended this year — make better decisions on subspecialties they may plan to practice in and offers practical insights from faculty to ease their path forward.

Nathan Chow, MD, a third-year in the Advanced Dermatology Residency Program, has served as the lead physician among Dermatology division faculty helping students get the clinic up and running and supervising care. They serve largely the uninsured or underinsured in the Greater Tucson area.

An FDA-approved osteoporosis treatment might nudge a mutated protein back into shape and improve heart function, according to a study by University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson researchers.

The Sarver Heart Center director and associate director are recognized Feb. 10 with peers, friends and family as team “to build a world-class cardiovascular program here.” With a $75 million fundraising campaign under way by the college (and $27 million already committed) they’re fast on their way to reaching the goal.

Three fellows in the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship won top honors in the competition in Phoenix and will be recognized this weekend at the ACC AZ Chapter Annual Meeting and compete at nationals in Chicago in March.
