Department of Dermatology
Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship

Throughout this one-year fellowship, Mohs and other surgical procedures will be performed under the supervision of an experienced American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS) approved Mohs surgeon. As the training year progresses, the fellow transitions to greater independence based on demonstrated clinical and surgical skills.

Along with ACGME accreditation, this fellowship program meets the application requirements for membership with the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS). The ACMS safeguards the standards of Mohs micrographic surgery by ensuring that fellows-in-training are properly trained so that they will acquire the necessary expertise to perform Mohs micrographic surgery. Programs must meet the specified guidelines both in terms of the program’s director and the program’s site.

ACGME accredited Micrographic Surgery & Dermatologic Oncology (MSDO) fellowship training programs must pass a rigorous application and review process before being allowed to train a fellow. This training program is not established to be a preceptorship, but rather academically rigorous training grounds presided over by individuals who have proven their commitment to Mohs micrographic surgery, as evidenced by consistent and on-going teaching.

  • Monthly surgical journal club focused on critical appraisal of the literature and contemporary topics in Mohs micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology
  • 100% pass rate on the Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery (MDS) subspecialty board examination
  • Regular teaching and mentorship from Jason DuPont, MD, and Jeff Krase, MD
  • Close collaboration with subspecialty colleagues in head and neck oncology, plastic surgery, oculoplastic surgery and radiation oncology
  • Experienced, collaborative support team and dedicated Mohs surgery suites at both the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System and University of Arizona Cancer Center
  • Opportunities to teach and work with nine University of Arizona dermatology residents

Throughout this one-year fellowship, fellows receive comprehensive training in Mohs micrographic surgery and other cutaneous surgical procedures under the direct supervision of the program director, Jason DuPont, MD, an experienced American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS)-approved Mohs surgeon. Responsibility increases progressively over the course of the year, with fellows advancing toward greater independence as they demonstrate proficiency in clinical assessment, surgical technique and patient management.

Fellows work side by side with faculty each day in an educational environment grounded in close mentorship, ongoing feedback and graduated responsibility. The program director directly observes the fellow’s patient evaluations, including history-taking and physical examination, as well as the full spectrum of cutaneous surgical procedures, including destructive modalities, excisions and Mohs micrographic surgery.

Residents and fellows train across three primary clinical sites.

Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS)

The Tucson VA Medical Center, the flagship facility of SAVAHCS, is home to one of the busiest VA dermatology departments in the country, with a high volume of patients evaluated and treated for skin cancer. The Mohs unit includes an on-site laboratory and multiple surgical rooms, providing fellows and residents with extensive experience in skin cancer surgery and reconstruction.

Banner – University Medicine Multispecialty Services Clinic at Pima Canyon

Opened in 2018, this freestanding facility serves as the primary clinical and administrative site for the Department of Dermatology. Residents’ weekly continuity clinics are held here, supported by 17 exam and procedure rooms as well as a phototherapy treatment room. The site also features a modern conference room dedicated to trainee education, along with faculty and resident office space, where each resident has an individual workstation and laptop.

University of Arizona Cancer Center – North Campus

The University of Arizona Cancer Center – North Campus is a clinical unit of Banner – University Medical Center Tucson and is closely affiliated with the research facilities of the University of Arizona Cancer Center. This site is home to the Cutaneous Oncology Program clinics, directed by Clara Curiel, MD, and the Mohs surgery suite, directed by Jason DuPont, MD. Weekly procedural and oncology clinics at this location provide trainees with broad exposure to cutaneous oncology and a wide range of operative procedures.
