Faculty Salaries & Incentives Working Group
This working group is charged with reviewing salary structures and salary incentive plans within the College of Medicine . While this is an enormous topic or set of topics, the Dean would like this working group to consider the following issues:
- Creation of salary profiles for faculty in the CoM which allocate for each year the proportion of salary from teaching, research, clinical care and administration.
- Creation of a set of guidelines to apply when considering whether faculty salaries should be on fiscal year or academic year calendars. In order to provide a level playing field for all faculty in the basic sciences, guidelines for and options for choosing between these two options should be constructed.
- A salary incentive scheme should be suggested for faculty who can or do derive a portion of salary funding from sponsored research support. In general, I believe we should work towards a structure which allows faculty to increase their salary with funding from sponsored research support with the quid pro quo being that they will be required to offset a certain portion of salary that they are currently receiving from state dollars. This process should be in alignment with initiative 1).
- The proposals should have generalizability for faculty in clinical departments and basic science departments. Having said that, many of these issues are different for faculty in the two situations, and part of the working group’s deliberation should be to clearly identify regions of commonality and regions of differences. Each department will want to take the guidelines which are suggested and potentially make modifications which are appropriate and for their circumstances.
The group will recive copies of the salary incentive schemes which currently exist within the CoM, as well as a list of features of well-designed incentive schemes.
