Strategic Plan for Research at the College of Medicine

January 2005

As faculty, we are uniquely positioned to contribute to the fundamental understanding of disease processes and to implement new diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic strategies. The following lists a strategic set of steps to increase Biomedical Research at the College of Medicine.

  • Strengthen multi-disciplinary research programs in cancer, diabetes, neuroscience, and cardiovascular biology
    • Establish teams of basic and clinical science faculty
    • Ensure diversity of the teams
    • Build on existing strengths and potential for growth
    • Coordinate with other UA colleges, the Phoenix campus, the VAH and industry
  • Recruit faculty strategically at all levels with a multidisciplinary research model
    • Couple start-up packages and space to a concrete research and mentoring plan
    • Coordinate recruitments with the DRC and other UA colleges,
    • Integrate research with the COM clinical strategic plan
  • Maximize research space utilization
    • Utilize the COM Space Policy and model data to evaluate space utilization
    • Develop a master plan for COM space allocations
      • Include the multiple Tucson and Phoenix locations
    • Dean’s Research Council Space Committee (DRCSC) will assist in
      • identifying contiguous release space to develop research programs in cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular biology, and neuroscience.
      • communicate with faculty-based department, center or institute space committees to monitor space utilization
      • make recommendations to resolve conflicts between departments and centers
      • coordinate the utilization of new research space, i.e. Medical Research Building (MRB) and Arizona Biomedical Collaborative (ABC1)
  • Develop a policy for research core support services
    • Establish criteria for needs assessment
    • Create benchmarks for evaluating the success of a service
    • Generate a definition and mechanism of institutional support
    • Establish criteria for dissolution of services
    • Establish a mechanism for avoiding duplication
    • Create a template and criteria for efficient cost recovery and fee schedules
  • Develop research incentive plan
    • Develop objective criteria for evaluating research success
    • Salary adjustment plan for basic science and clinical faculty
    • Indirect cost recovery sliding scale
  • Coordinate research with Bio 5
    • Functional Genomics
    • Transgenic/Knockout mouse core facility
    • Epigenetics
    • High-Throughput chemistries
    • Biomedical Engineering
  • Develop biomedical translational research
    • Establish a clinical research scholars’ training program
    • Support infrastructure for integration of human biological and clinical data e.g. tissue banking
    • Improvement in state-wide technology transfer issues
    • Streamline regulatory issue related to translational research
    • Establishing consortia of research programs in Arizona
    • Utilize T-Health/Telehealth Program
    • Develop medical imaging initiative
    • Increase medical device development opportunities
    • Coordinate with clinical efforts of UPH/UMC North
    • Increase collaborations with other UA Colleges and BNI / NIDDK / Scottsdale/ TGEN/ VAH
  • Increase research education and training
    • Increase opportunities of undergraduates, graduate students, medical students to participate in biomedical research.
    • Increase extramural funding for interdisciplinary research training programs
      • Apply for physician scholar and MD/ Ph.D. training program type funding
      • Continue applying for additional training grants
      • Involve local and state-wide clinical sites
  • Improve communication throughout the COM research community
    • Establish an extramural scientific advisory board for the COM research community
    • Establish a web based investigator research network
      • Searchable database consisting of current faculty NIH biosketch, research activity, study section service and specialized research techniques and equipment available in the laboratory.
    • Ensure that the membership on the Dean’s Research Council is representative of COM research activities
    • Continue with an annual COM-wide research forum
    • Generate and disseminate annual evaluation of the progress towards accomplishing the goals of this strategic plan for researc
