Human Neuroscience Working Group

The Human Neurosciences Working Group (the name has been changed several times) has been formed to develop a plan for expanding our research, educational and clinical efforts in human neurosciences. Human neurological diseases will form one of the three major focus areas for incremental recruitment within the College of Medicine . The necessity and the advisability of growing the clinical neurological sciences effort has been suggested broadly across the university. Frank Forreca, Chair of the Human Neurosciences Working Group has suggested that the optimal way to think about this in the short term is to develop a College of Medicine plan. While, and certainly after, doing so the strength that we develop will then be integrated with both the basic neuroscience and cognitive expertise at the institution.

The working group should consider the College of Medicine ’s efforts in the broadest possible context, which means including expertise in Phoenix and at the Barrow Neurological Institute as well as at Sun Health and at TGen. Please speak broadly to individuals within and outside the institution as you devise this plan. The purpose of this working group is to solicit input broadly as well as to then distill that input down into an initial draft document.

Please suggest those disease areas in which you believe the following criteria apply: the magnitude of the problem is substantial, the opportunities both from the clinical and basic research side are substantial, there are obvious mechanisms within the state to coalesce our efforts, there are development opportunities, interdisciplinary research can be readily envisioned across both departments and centers within the College of Medicine and the University of Arizona more broadly, and finally, and most importantly, you believe we can rise to national prominence with the appropriate coalescence of effort and resources.
