Diabetes Working Group

A Diabetes Working Group has been formed to develop a plan for expanding our research, educational and clinical efforts in diabetes. Six subgroups have been organized with the charges of:

  1. Comprehensive Diabetes Center
  2. VA-University Affiliations
  3. Clinical Research
  4. Basic and Translational Research
  5. Outreach and Education
  6. Community and Government Relations

Each of these working groups will be engaging faculty, as members and as consultants, in generating a plan for the future. Discussion items will include:

  1. Organization of the diabetes center at University Physicians Hospital
  2. Recruitment of a prominent physician scientist in pediatric and/or adult endocrinology, as a clinical leader for the program
  3. Integration of both the Tucson and Phoenix VA facilities into the program
  4. Linkage of the Department Head search in Physiology to expansion of the basic research program in diabetes
  5. Linkage of the College of Public Health Export program to the COM effort in diabetes, and more broadly to outreach programs throughout the state of Arizona, including those through the telemedicine program
  6. Location of current and new investigators in contiguous space in MRB, LSN, or other COM space
  7. Linkage of the molecular immunology effort in IBSB to type I DM
  8. Integration of our diabetes efforts with those at TGEN, and programming of the ABC building
  9. Integration with Diabetes programs in Phoenix, such as the new program at Scottsdale Healthcare
  10. Development efforts to support these initiatives
  11. Organization of investigator interest groups to assist with planning

Bill Duckworth has graciously agreed to serve as an advisor to our program. His depth on experience in setting up comprehensive diabetes care programs will be invaluable. This will facilitate our ability to rapidly generate a comprehensive plan, and will also provide a mechanism to link our efforts with those at the VA in Phoenix.
