The faculty members of the Dean’s Research Council have been requested by the Dean of the College of Medicine (COM) to survey the existing shared/core/lab services available to the College of Medicine faculty to ascertain the scope of activities.
Suggested tasks for Subcommittee on Core Facilities include:
- Outline plans to consolidate core functions as much as possible
- Review current scope of activities
- Define criteria for in-house vs. outsourcing
- Define or refine criteria to distinguish between cores which are functionally:
- University-wide
- College-wide
- Departmentally or center-based
- Determine mechanism(s) to size cores appropriately based on systematic analysis of demand and supply
- Determine organized strategy for seeking large equipment grants and/or acquiring equipment for beta testing
- Determine mechanism to optimize pricing structures for core services
- Discuss tiered pricing, bundling, user fees, other considerations
- Setting price points
- Suggest optimal administrative and financial structure for management of cores
- Organization of responsibilities of core personnel
- Guidelines for service vs. investigative
- Quality control
- Taxation structure for space utilization
- Revenue distribution and incentive plans for core activities
