Deans Research Council Subcommittee on Core Facilities

The faculty members of the Dean’s Research Council have been requested by the Dean of the College of Medicine (COM) to survey the existing shared/core/lab services available to the College of Medicine faculty to ascertain the scope of activities. 

Suggested tasks for Subcommittee on Core Facilities include:

  1. Outline plans to consolidate core functions as much as possible
    1. Review current scope of activities
    2. Define criteria for in-house vs. outsourcing
  2. Define or refine criteria to distinguish between cores which are functionally:
    1. University-wide
    2. College-wide
    3. Departmentally or center-based
  3. Determine mechanism(s) to size cores appropriately based on systematic analysis of demand and supply
  4. Determine organized strategy for seeking large equipment grants and/or acquiring equipment for beta testing
  5. Determine mechanism to optimize pricing structures for core services
    1. Discuss tiered pricing, bundling, user fees, other considerations
    2. Setting price points
  6. Suggest optimal administrative and financial structure for management of cores
    1. Organization of responsibilities of core personnel
      1. Guidelines for service vs. investigative
      2. Quality control
    2. Taxation structure for space utilization
    3. Revenue distribution and incentive plans for core activities
