Selecting a URL

Determining the domain name for a Web site reflects both marketing and technical consideration. In general, shorter more concise and recognizable names are preferred over longer names. Shorter names are visually more attractive, easier to remember and easier to type.

In August 2005, AHSC began instituting a four-level hierarchical naming convention:

[NAME].MEDICINE.ARIZONA.EDU or [NAME].AHSC.ARIZONA.EDU

All requests for URLs by units, sections, departments, schools and administrative areas will confirm to this hierarchical naming convention. In the interest of brevity, ‘MED.ARIZONA.EDU’ is also available. As appropriate, URLs are registered both with and without the ‘WWW’ prefix.

Example:
• name.medicine.arizona.edu
• www.name.medicine.arizona.edu.

There is no set-up fee for registering a ‘MED.ARIZONA.EDU’ URL or setting up a ‘MED.ARIZONA.EDU’ Web account on the AHSC server.

Other Domains

Web sites that require of use of a .com .org .net URL are required to register their domain name with a third-party, for-fee service provider. The html file for such Web sites can be hosted on the AHSC server, but all registration fees and maintenance issues related to that domain are the explicit responsibility of the unit registering the domain name. The AHSC Web team will provide information necessary to point the domain to the correct IP hosting address. Any technical assistance required to setup the third-party domain will be billed at the hourly rate of $55 per hour.

URL Request Process:

1. Web owners should select a URL that is both descriptive and relevant to services provided by their Web site using the following criteria:
1. URL is not already taken
2. URL is not too general in nature as to confuse Web visitors
3. URL follows the AHSC naming convention

2. Complete the appropriate form:
   1. Request for Web Server Account - Web space and a URL.
   2. Request for a URL - URL only.
3. Upon submission of a request form, e-mail notification will be sent to AHSC Web Team. Requests will be review within 24 hours and processed as follows:
   1. If the requested URL is objectionable, a reply will be communicated to the requestor explaining any issues and providing alternate name suggestions.
   2. If there are no objections, the proposed URL is processed and the domain name will be available in approximately 2-3 working days.
4. Applicants denied a specific URL by the AHSC Web Team may appeal the action to Chief Information Officer, Steven Wormsley.

URLs will be reviewed using the priority: Academic Area/Research Area, College Initiative, and Business Unit.

NOTE: Failure to abide by policy or efforts to circumvent this process may result in forfeiture of domain and/or hosting privileges on the AHSC server.
