A Message from the Dean


The University of Arizona, College of Medicine invites applications and nominations for Head, Department of Surgery.  

sutureThe University of Arizona College of Medicine is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as Head of the Department of Surgery at the Arizona Health Sciences Center . The Head will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Department of Surgery in the University as well as the state and region. Essential qualifications include a distinguished record as a senior academician, clinician and educator, excellent interpersonal and mentoring skills, a proven background in faculty recruitment, mentoring and development, and demonstrated leadership experience including administrative experience and skills.

The Head of the Department of Surgery will work collaboratively with the Dean of the College of Medicine and other leaders of the Arizona Health Sciences Center to build on excellence in existing teaching, team based research, and clinical programs and to position the Department for significant growth as it expands to meet the academic and clinical service demands in Arizona including a second medical school campus in Phoenix.

The Head will oversee eight Departmental sections, three accredited residency programs, two accredited fellowships and an active undergraduate educational program. The position will include Chief of Service responsibilities at University Medical Center (UMC) and University Physicians Hospital at Kino along with their ambulatory surgery centers. UMC is the primary teaching affiliate of the College of Medicine and the region’s only Level 1 trauma program serving in excess of 1 million people.

The Arizona Health Sciences Center is located in the high desert community of Tucson , Arizona . Safe communities, excellent schools, and abundant recreational opportunities exist within our diverse and culturally rich city.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • As the chief academic and administrative officer of the Department of Surgery, provide excellent leadership that promotes professional development among existing faculty members and attracts highly-motivated and well qualified faculty, staff and students to the Department.
  • Enhance and expand the research portfolio of the Department through recruitment of new faculty.
  • Work closely with the Dean of the College of Medicine to develop the Department in outstanding research, education and service and to promote the Department’s visibility.
  • Maintain his/her own active research program and extramural funding.
  • Oversee the Department’s teaching responsibilities in the College of Medicine and in the Graduate College .
  • Serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the Department, both in the University and in the community.
  • Oversee Departmental budgeting and resource management.
  • Assure implementation of University policies including diversity, faculty governance and evaluation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must have a PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree
  • Applicants must be eligible for medical licensure in Arizona
  • Demonstrated leadership experience including administrative experience and skills
  • Tenure eligible background
  • A distinguished record as a senior academician, clinician and educator
  • Board eligibility or certification in a surgical practice discipline.
  • Proven background in faculty recruitment, mentoring and development.

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Excellent communications skills
  • A commitment to exemplary teaching, graduate education, interdisciplinary collaboration and diversity.
