The University of Arizona College of Medicine is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as Director of the Financially Endowed Arizona Arthritis Center at the Arizona Health Sciences Center. The Director will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Arizona Arthritis Center as the Endowed Stephens Chair in the University. Essential qualifications include a distinguished record as an established investigator, excellent interpersonal and mentoring skills, a proven background in faculty recruitment, mentoring and development, and demonstrated leadership experience including administrative experience and skills.
The mission of the Arizona Arthritis Center is "to create a world free of arthritis and autoimmune disease". This will be achieved primarily through basic and clinical research linked with excellent clinical care and education.
The Director of the Arizona Arthritis Center will work collaboratively with the Dean of the College of Medicine and other leaders of the Arizona Health Sciences Center to build on excellence in existing research, teaching, and clinical programs in the Department of Medicine for significant growth as it expands to meet the academic and clinical service demands in Arizona and the Southwest.
The Director will oversee the research and research based teaching programs as well as undergraduate educational programs.

The College of Medicine is seeking an individual who is able to work with diverse students and colleagues, who has experience with a variety of teaching methods and curricular perspectives.
Duties and Responsibilities
- As the Director of the Arizona Arthritis Center and its chief administrative officer, this individual will provide excellent leadership that promotes professional development among existing faculty members and attracts highly-motivated and well qualified faculty, staff and students to the Arizona Arthritis Center.
- Enhance and expand the research portfolio of the Arizona Arthritis Center through recruitment of new faculty.
- Work closely with the Dean of the College of Medicine to develop outstanding research, education and service and to promote the Arizona Arthritis Center's visibility.
- Maintain his/her own active research program and extramural funding.
- Cooperate with members of the Department of Medicine to accomplish arthritis and related diseases teaching responsibilities in the College of Medicine and in the Graduate College.
- Serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the Arizona Arthritis Center, both in the University and in the community.
- Oversee Arizona Arthritis Center budgeting and resource management.
- Assure implementation of University policies including diversity, faculty governance, and evaluation.
- Interface with the Advisory Board of the Arizona Arthritis Center.
- Work closely with the Chief of the Rheumatology Section in the Department of Medicine.
Minimum Qualifications
- An MD, or equivalent medical degree.
- Eligible for medical licensure in Arizona.
- Eligible for appointment at professor status level.
- Tenure eligible background.
Preferred Qualifications
- Board certification in rheumatology.
- Demonstrated leadership experience including administrative experience and skills.
- A commitment to exemplary investigation, teaching, graduate education, interdisciplinary collaboration and diversity.
- Proven background in faculty recruitment, mentoring and development.
- A distinguished record as a senior academician, clinician and educator
- Excellent communications skills.
