The University of Arizona is recognized among the top research institutions in the United States, both public and private, and the UA College of Medicine is a major contributor to this reputation. Medical research – the driving force in health care that saves and improves lives, prevents disease and searches for new methods of healing – is key to the College's mission, and the College has a long history of pioneering medical achievements. Here, the world's first artificial wrist was designed, Arizona's first heart transplant surgery performed, the CardioWest™ temporary Total Artificial Heart developed and countless groundbreaking advances discovered in the prevention and treatment of disease.
Scientists in nearly every department and center at the College are working on a vast array of basic, clinical and applied research projects, promising and achieving breakthroughs that will improve individuals' lives at all stages of the life cycle. Some are seeking to solve the mysteries of childhood diseases, while others are dedicated to developing better treatments – and hopefully cures – for such killers as heart disease, cancer and infectious diseases. Still others are testing new treatments for arthritis, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, all major threats to our aging population.
The College of Medicine is committed to five statewide research initiatives, identified to address some of the most pressing health problems affecting the people of Arizona. Complementing the biosciences research under way throughout the College is a focus on enhanced collaboration and translational (bench-to-bedside) research. New advanced treatments and clinical trials of promising new medications and therapies offer hope to patients in need in Tucson, Phoenix and throughout the state.
