UA Medical Students Honored for Exceptional Volunteer Service To Underserved People

Six students from The University of Arizona College of Medicine recently were singled out for their exceptional volunteer efforts on behalf of underserved Southern Arizonans at the college's 17th Annual Medical Student Awards Ceremony.

The honorees are all active participants in the college's Commitment to Underserved People (CUP) Program, which provides learning opportunities in clinical skills, program leadership, health advocacy and health education and promotion.

Second-year students Rachel Martin and Vivi Nguyen won the Bringhurst Award for Exceptional Service. Ms. Martin was honored for her leadership in the Nogales Pediatric Clinic, a monthly medical clinic for Mexican children with neurological and orthopedic disorders. UA med students work with volunteer physicians on teams, provide intake, draw blood and translate. Ms. Nguyen won the award for her outstanding commitment to the Med Teach program, in which UA medical students serve as mentors and role models to Southern Arizona elementary, middle-school and high school students. Med Teach shows teens that science can be interesting and fun and encourages them to think about pursuing careers in health care. Ms. Nguyen also donates her time to the Nogales Pediatric Clinic and another CUP program, Back to School Night, in which refugee children are provided with a full set of clothing and school supplies in August each year.

The CUP Alumni Scholarship Award went to second-year student Amanda McDowell, coordinator of the Medical Students Educating Teens Program (MedSET). This program provides health education and support to adolescents in group homes.

Exceptional Service Awards went to fourth-year students Lynn Munoz Butvidas and Paula Marchionda. The two donated more than 500 volunteer hours to various CUP programs between them during medical school on top of their already busy schedules.

Second-year student Gabriel Elias Sarah won the Edith Petrie Brown Community Service Award for his leadership and dedication to MSAPP (Medical Students at Planned Parenthood) and Tu Nidito's Magwitch Treehouse Summer Camp.
