Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology (BMCB)

The Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics and Molecular & Cellular Biology offer a joint Ph.D. program.  Over 65 faculty members participate in the BMCB Graduate Program which, through joint appointments in Biochemistry or Molecular & Cellular Biology, represent an additional 15 university departments or interdisciplinary programs.  The goal of the program is to help students develop critical experimental and analytical skills, along with superior abilities in oral and written communication, such that they are prepared for a range of careers in science.  The program offers a thorough foundation in the principles of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology as part of a challenging first year core curriculum, and the opportunity to pursue independent research in the laboratory of any of the program faculty.  Students rotate through three or four laboratories in the first year and then choose a research project and dissertation advisor.  Students can choose from three course tracks: Biochemistry, Molecular & Cellular Biology, or a joint track.  Those following the joint track receive a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology.
