Introduction

The following federal scholarship and loan programs are for exceptionally financially needy students. Therefore, Federal law requires that parental information be submitted, although as a graduate/professional student, the medical student is an independent student for some other federal aid programs. The student is the borrower for the Health Professions Loans and parental information is only to determine eligibility. The following information is based on federal laws in effect at the time this is written and is subject to change.

Primary Care Loan Program

In addition, to requiring parental information to be submitted to the school, acceptance of the Health Professions Primary Care Loan requires medical students to complete a primary care residency and practice in a primary care health field in the United States. Interest accruing during approved deferment: 0%

Primary Care Commitment

The Primary Care Loan, if accepted, requires the student to agree (1) to enter and complete a residency training program in primary health care (i.e. family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, combined medicine/pediatrics or preventive medicine) not later than 4 years after graduation from medical school and (2) to practice in such care in the United States through the date on which the loan is repaid in full.

If the student accepts primary care funding and fails to complete the primary health care residency and practice, the loan will be recomputed at an interest rate of 18% beginning on the date of non-compliance, instead of 5% during repayment for the borrower who complies with the primary care commitment.

If offered an award, review the promissory note carefully before accepting the funds.
