Molecular Medicine

Format of Instruction
(including overview of five ‘core’ concentration sessions, with learning objectives):

There are multiple levels of instruction in the molecular medicine concentration. These include the following:

  • Classroom sessions (see below) which will begin with a seminar given by a local/regional expert in a molecular medicine-based topic and which will conclude with student-centric discussions / exercises. These discussions / exercises are designed to critically reflect on the seminar and emphasize the scientific method used to develop and research a hypothesis-driven laboratory-based project. Over time, these sessions will ensure that all students become adept at framing a question, designing a research strategy and understanding that a myriad of experimental methodologies are used to address a diverse range of scientific questions.
  • Once a project mentor is chosen, students will become an integral member of that mentor’s research laboratory. Upon choosing a project and having that project approved, the format of instruction will shift to one that focuses on the student-mentor relationship. For example, mentors will steer students towards important reading materials, oversee student-directed laboratory training and experiment completion, ask students to attend and participate in regularly scheduled laboratory meetings, and involve students in scholarly activities (where appropriate) such as writing and presenting abstracts, manuscripts and scientific presentations.
