Medical Humanities and Ethics

Description

Medical Humanities and Ethics (MHE) is the multidisciplinary exploration of the human and social aspects of medicine, with scholarship spanning the arts (visual and performing arts, literature), humanities (philosophy, history, and ethics), and social sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology, religion, and law). Understanding MHE is integral to bringing together the science and art of medicine, contributing to reflective clinical practice and sound policy decisions.

This concentration opens a window onto the way physicians and patients manage the complexity of social and cultural contexts within which we experience and practice medicine. MHE helps cultivate analytical and observational skills, empathy, self-awareness and self-reflection, and appreciation of cultural diversity for all students. Scholarship in MHE allows students to address issues across the full range of the medical and life sciences, and involves philosophical questions about how biomedical science works, historical explorations of what has changed over time and why, examinations of the legal context, policy framework, and culturally contingent ethical assumptions that shape our decisions, and analysis of how all these factors shape what we consider to be wise medical decisions about patients, physicians, and providers at any given time and place.
