Immunobiology
The Department of Immunobiology offers instructional and research expertise in the areas of modern molecular medicine, immunobiology, and molecular pathogenesis.
Our faculty consists of eight tenure track faculty members plus three research faculty members and two joint appointees who contribute to the educational and scholarly activities of the department. Our faculty members have received numerous awards for teaching excellence and innovation. Our major teaching effort is in Medical Microbiology MBIM801A and MBIM801B, the two-semester required basic science course that instructs all second year medical students in immunology, virology, parasitology, mycology, and infectious diseases.
Our doctoral program is departmentally based, but multidisciplinary in that our “extended” faculty includes 19 individuals representing six departments. A total of approximately 26 doctoral candidates are currently enrolled in the program and about four per year graduate.
Our faculty carry out research in cancer, autoimmunity, developmental immunology, inflammation, viral immunology, microbial immunology, and pathogenesis. Our research recognizes the importance of the disciplines underpinning clinical advances in the areas of molecular immunology, transplantation, allergy, autoimmunity, cancer, neurological disease and cardiovascular diseases.
