UA Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition (CPAN)
A collaboration among the UA Colleges of Agriculture & Life
Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public
Health, CPAN’s goal is to gain a better understanding of the long-term
effects of physical activity and nutrition on chronic disease such as diabetes,
and to translate cutting edge research into community programs that
improve the health and well-being of children, adolescents, and adults
of all ages.
UA College of Medicine, Steele Children’s Research Center
Investigator Sherman Garver, PhD, associate research professor
of pediatrics, has received a two-year grant from the Tohono O’odham
Nation to study the role that omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) may play in
preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes and its associated complications.
Researcher Liqun Bai, MD, research assistant professor of pediatrics, is exploring ways to prevent type 1 diabetes. Dr. Bai is examining the role specific genes play in causing the destruction of the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas.
Arizona Proteomics Consortium
Under the sponsorship of the Arizona Research Laboratories, Arizona
Cancer Center, BIO5 Institute, Department of Chemistry and the Southwest
Environmental Health Science Center, a new proteomics facility is now centered
in the BIO5 Thomas W. Keating Bioresearch Building on the UA campus. The
facility provides service, technology development and training in the study
of the protein complement of the genome. The consortium will play
a lead role in increased translational and clinical proteomic efforts in
diabetes research.
UA Zuckerman College of Public Health
The UA Zuckerman College of Public Health focuses on eliminating
health disparities in Arizona and the Southwest. One of its major
areas of service has been diabetes prevention or the prevention of complications
related to diabetes. Among the programs that address diabetes are:
Arizona Prevention Research Center, Canyon Ranch Center
This center contributes to the reduction in health disparities and the improvement in health status of multiethnic communities primarily in the Arizona-Sonora, Mexico, border region. Specifically, the center focuses on interventions that address diabetes and associated obesity and depression.Center for Health Equality
This center works to eradicate health disparities in Arizona by integrating research, training and community outreach and focusing on diabetes and substance abuse in Native American and Hispanic communities.Rural Health Office (RHO)
The RHO serves as a major link to rural community clinics and public health departments, Indian Health Service hospitals, rural critical access hospitals, and tribal and non-tribal EMS systems. The RHO also collaborates with communities in working to increase access to care, provide disease-prevention and health-promotion activities, enhance rural health infrastructure and build long-term partnerships to decrease health disparities in underserved communities.
